Place the object ball on the far side of the side pocket, hiding about half of it (or maybe a little less) behind the point of the pocket.

I place the cue ball two balls width out from the cushion at the second diamond. You can start closer and work your way back. I like to freehand this, but it's probably more effective if you can get your leg on the table and bridge off of it. I use about 80 degrees of elevation. My tip hits the cue ball at 6 o'clock aiming parallel to the long rail, but the stroke adds a little left english, so I'm actually stroking towards myself. Hit it firm and keep pushing the limits of the miscue circle.
