Europe Shot #1   Europe - 1  USA - 0

Europe opened the match with this partner shot, with Nick Nikolaidis laying across the table holding a piece of chalk in his mouth and balancing a ball on top of that. Ewa Laurance got down on the cue ball which was balanced on a stack of chalks on the rail. She shot the cue ball off the stack of chalks, hitting the object ball off Nikolaidis' mouth on the fly, and pocketing it in the far corner pocket. On the USA's attempt at the shot, Jeanette Lee was unsuccessful in duplicating the shot, trying to shoot the ball off of Bruce Barthelette's mouth. This shot is the partner version of Where'd Glenn Go?.

Team USA countered with the Green Monster jump shot, a Barthelette specialty. It's a table length jump shot over an 8 inch high wall dubbed the "Green Monster" and into a baseball glove sitting on a mini couch at the end of the table. The cue ball has to stay in the glove for the shot to be successful. Barthelette nailed it on his first attempt. Nikolaidis came up for Europe's attempt and was unable to replicate it, letting the USA pull even.

Europe Shot #2   Europe - 1  USA - 1

Looking to restore the lead, Nikolaidis challenged with a series of one-handed jump shots through a spinning rack. With the one and four balls on the table, and the other four balls in his hand, he started with the one ball, walked around the table placing the other balls, trying to jump each of them one-handed through the rack and into a pocket on the other side of the table. He got through the first five on his first attempt eliciting applause from the audience, but rattled the sixth. He missed on his second attempt too. Lee came up for USA's attempt at the shot, unable to get more that one ball in, leaving the score knotted at 1.

USA Shot #2   Europe - 2  USA - 1

Continuing with the jump shot theme, Lee brought up this shot, trying to jump the cue ball over a book and into an object ball, causing the object ball to jump over a second book and in to the corner pocket. She was unable to make the shot on either of her attempts. Laurance came up to attempt the challenge for Europe, making the shot and giving Europe the lead.

Europe Shot #3   Europe - 2  USA - 1

Laurance came up for this challenge for Europe. This is a resistance masse where she tries to pocket one ball up table in the corner and have the cue ball follow it before making a hard turn past the blocker ball to make another ball hanging in the opposite corner pocket. Nerves must have gotten the best of her as she missed both attempts. With a chance at restoring a tie, Barthelette came up but was also unable to complete the shot.

USA Shot #3   Europe - 3  USA - 1

Barthelette decided to move forward with this shot. Initially, he would hit the first object ball up in to the tube, and as it came back down and rolled on the table, he would hit the cue ball into it a second time and combo the ball hanging in the corner pocket. He was unfortunate to miss and, on the second attempt, sportingly called a foul on himself as the object ball did not completely disappear in the tube. For Europe, Nikolaidis was able to capitalize on the opportunity making the shot on his second attempt.

Europe Shot #4   Europe - 3  USA - 1

Nikolaidis came again with a series of one-handed jump shots, this time over walls of chalks and into the side pocket. His amazing talent at these kind of shots was not fully demonstrated however as he failed on both of his attempts. Similar to the other one-handed jump shot though, Lee never looked a threat of picking up a point on this challenge as Europe maintained their lead.

USA Shot #4   Europe - 4  USA - 2

Instead, Lee came back with this version of "The Hand Is Quicker Than The Eye" shot, seen in the movie "The Hustler". Shooting through the cue ball, causing it to deflect off the first object ball, she followed through to hit the second object ball with her cue, sending it down table to split the standard carom-combination out from under a handkerchief and into the corner pockets. She made the shot easily, pulling a point back for the USA, but Laurance was equal to the task and restored the lead back to two.

Europe Shot #5   Europe - 5  USA - 2

Laurance followed up with this extended version of the classic railroad shot. Initially, she jumped the cue ball over the row of balls and through the rack, sending it three rails around the table. While it was moving, she hit it again, hitting the same three rails, and then getting the cue ball to go up the cue sticks and back down to pocket the hanging ball in the side pocket. It was a great sight to see her complete it. Lee came up for the USA's attempt, but was unable to get it done.

USA Shot #5   Europe - 6  USA - 3

Trying to get back into the match, Lee used this tricky stroke shot. The cue ball and object ball are frozen and lined up toward the short rail on the other side, while the blocking object ball prevents a direct throw into the corner pocket. Instead, stroking with a bit of follow, the cue ball can double kiss the object ball and cut it into the corner pocket. Lee was successful in getting a point for the USA, but Nikolaidis saw that Europe would not be outdone and restored the three point lead.

Europe Shot #6   Europe - 7  USA - 4

Nikolaidis decided to turn to ambidextrous jumping for his next challenge. He alternated hitting each ball, the first time hitting it three rails around the rack and the second time jumping it through the rack and into the corner pocket. The other caveat was that one of the balls had to be hit left-handed. Nikolaidis finally made one of his challenges to stretch Europe's lead to four, but Barthelette showed his comfort with this shot as well to keep pace.

USA Shot #6   Europe - 7  USA - 5

With time running out, Barthelette chose this difficult jump shot involving two cue balls and a stacking ball. Two balls were stacked in the corner pocket and the two cue balls were lined up all the way across the table. He hit one cue ball into the other sending it towards the stack, but before it got there, he jumped the original cue ball over the second one to pocket the bottom ball first clearing the way for the second cue ball to pocket the ball that was on top of the stack. Taking his time to measure the line and quickly moving from a standard stroke to a jump stroke, Barthelette made the shot look easy. Laurance was not as fortunate, however, letting the USA close within two again.

Europe Shot #7   Europe - 8  USA - 5

Trying to restore their three point advantage, Laurance pulled out this slightly-more-difficult-than-it-looks five rail jump kick shot. A five rail kick is difficult enough, but to add a jump to it makes it much more difficult. With a little coaching from Nikolaidis, she was able to hit the shot though. Lee, on the other hand, was unable to repeat it, and Europe's three point lead was restored.

USA Shot #7   Europe - 9  USA - 6

Now needing to score a point just to stay alive, Lee went with this close range jump shot, similar to my Chain Reaction Jump shot. The cue ball was one chalk width from the blocking object ball. In addition, there was a trademark black widow spider on top of the blocking ball. Clearing that, the cue ball started a chain reaction to pocket the last ball in the corner pocket. Lee was able to make it, giving the USA it's last gasp of hope. Nikolaidis came up for Europe to put the match away and easily hit it as well for the victory and point to carry over in to the finals.
